Resin vs FDM 3D Printing: Which One Should You Choose?

Every newcomer to 3D printing asks the same question: should I get a resin printer or an FDM printer? The answer is "it depends" — but it depends on things most beginners don't know to ask. Let's break it down.

Print Quality: Resin Wins

Safety: Resin Has Real Requirements

This is the dealbreaker for many. Liquid resin is a skin irritant and sensitizer. You need:

  • Nitrile gloves (not latex — resin penetrates it)
  • Eye protection
  • Ventilation (window or enclosure with carbon filter)
  • IPA or resin detergent for washing prints
  • Proper disposal — cured resin can go in trash, liquid resin CANNOT go down drains

FDM? Open the box, load filament, press print. PLA smells like waffles. The only safety concern with FDM is ABS/ASA fumes (use an enclosure) and microplastic particles (ventilate).

Workflow: FDM Is "Load and Go"

FDM workflow: slice → print → remove from bed. Done in 10 seconds.

Resin workflow: slice → print → remove from plate → wash in IPA (5-10 min) → remove supports → post-cure under UV (5-30 min) → sand support marks. 30-60 minutes of hands-on work per print.

The Verdict

Get FDM if: You're a beginner, you print functional parts, you want a clean workspace, or you have kids/pets in the house.

Get Resin if: You're a miniature painter, jewelry designer, dental technician, or you need the highest possible detail and are willing to invest in safety and post-processing.

Get both if: You can afford it. They complement each other perfectly — FDM for structure, resin for detail.
