FDM Filament Temperature Guide: Optimal Settings for PLA, PETG, ABS, and TPU

FDM Filament Temperature Guide: Optimal Settings for PLA, PETG, ABS, and TPU

Temperature Is Everything in FDM Printing

Every filament material has an optimal temperature window. Print too cold — layers won't bond. Print too hot — stringing, oozing, and surface defects appear. This guide covers temperature ranges for four common FDM materials and explains how adjustments affect quality.

Material Temperature Reference

Filament Nozzle °C Bed °C Enclosure Fan Speed
PLA / PLA+ 200–220 55–65 No 100%
PETG 230–250 70–85 Recommended 30–50%
ABS 240–260 90–110 Yes 0% (off)
TPU (flexible) 220–240 40–60 No 50–75%

PLA and PLA+ — Easiest Start

ANTINSKY PLA+ Filament 1.75mm prints best at 205–215°C with a 60°C bed. PLA is forgiving, requires no enclosure, and produces crisp details even at high speed. For faster printing, ANTINSKY PLA+ High Speed is optimized for 250–350 mm/s while maintaining layer adhesion.

  • Too cold — Layer separation, poor adhesion, under-extrusion
  • Too hot — Stringing, blobs, heat creep causing clogs
  • Bed too cold — Warping at corners, first layer won't stick

PETG — Stronger and More Heat-Resistant

ANTINSKY PETG Filament 1.75mm needs 235–250°C nozzle and 75–85°C bed. PETG benefits from reduced part cooling — high fan speeds cause poor layer adhesion and brittleness. Apply glue stick on the build plate to prevent over-adhesion. PETG's layer bonding at 240°C+ makes it ideal for functional parts.

ABS — Engineering-Grade Toughness

ANTINSKY ABS Filament 1.75mm demands more from your printer. Chamber temperature should stay above 40°C (ideally 50–60°C) to prevent warping. ABS shrinks ~0.5–0.8% during cooling, so account for this in dimensional designs. Print with fan off for maximum layer adhesion.

  • Warping fix — Increase bed to 100°C+, use brim or raft, seal enclosure
  • Layer separation fix — Increase nozzle temp by 5°C steps, reduce/disable fan
  • Ventilation — Always print ABS in a ventilated area or with fume extraction

TPU — Flexible But Tricky

ANTINSKY TPU 95A Filament prints at 220–235°C with a 50°C bed. The key challenge is feeding: use direct-drive extruder, slow to 15–30 mm/s, and increase retraction to prevent oozing. Reduce fan to 50% for overhangs and bridges.

Temperature Tower — Best Calibration Tool

A temperature tower prints each segment at a different nozzle temperature. Inspect each for surface quality, stringing, and bonding. This is the most reliable way to find your filament's sweet spot — and results vary between colors and batches.

General Tips

  • Always run a temperature tower when trying new filament
  • Store filament dry — moisture causes steam bubbles that mimic overheating
  • Use a silicone sock on the nozzle for temperature stability
  • Let the bed preheat 3–5 minutes before starting for even heat distribution
