ABS vs PETG: The Engineering Filament Showdown
When standard PLA isn't enough, ABS and PETG are the next steps up. Both offer improved mechanical properties, but they excel in different areas.
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)
ABS is the traditional engineering filament known for its toughness, impact resistance, and heat tolerance (up to 100°C). However, ABS requires a heated enclosure, produces fumes, and is prone to warping.
- Pros: High impact strength, temperature resistant, paintable
- Cons: Needs enclosure, fumes, warping risk
- Print temp: 230-260°C | Bed: 90-110°C
PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol)
PETG combines ease of printing (similar to PLA) with better strength and temperature resistance. It's almost as strong as ABS but much easier to print.
- Pros: Easy to print, strong, low odor, good layer adhesion
- Cons: Stringing, less impact resistant than ABS
- Print temp: 230-260°C | Bed: 70-85°C
