A single-material part is the simplest possible print. But a lot of useful parts want two materials in one job — a rigid PLA+ body with a soft TPU grip, or PETG walls with ABS cores. Multi-material printing is not harder because of the printer; it is harder because of the transitions. Get those right and the whole job behaves.
Rules for choosing the print order
- Hotter materials first, cooler materials last. Print ABS/PETG before PLA if they share a build. Dropping bed temperature mid-job is easier than raising it without lifting the part.
- Rigid before flexible. When one tool lacks an active cooling break, loading TPU onto a long Bowden path can kink; setting the rigid structural material first and the flexible overlay last limits travel with soft filament.
- Support material in dedicated zones. If a PLA+ part needs removable support, let a second material carry the support interface.
Purge values are the hidden cost
Every colour or material change spits out a little warm plastic. Too little purge leaves streaks of the previous colour; too much wastes material and time. Tune purge per transition:

Interlocking: hope is not a bond
Two materials do not chemically weld just because they share a layer line. For a TPU overmould on a PLA core, let the two geometries interlock — a keyhole, a dovetail or a ribbed cavity — so the soft part is mechanically captured. Flush surfaces glued by chance are brittle failure points.
