The 0.4 mm nozzle is the default that ships on almost every printer, and for good reason — it balances detail and speed. But defaulting to it for every job is like using one hammer for everything. A wider nozzle prints robust parts in a fraction of the time for vases, mechanical brackets and lithophanes, while a fine nozzle rescues tiny features. Here is how to pick your bore and keep the hotend flowing.

Flow is the real limit

A wide nozzle only helps if the hotend can melt and push enough plastic per second — your "maximum volumetric flow". Push past it and you get under-extrusion, gaps and dragged strings. Upgrading to a high-flow hotend and a matching nozzle raises that ceiling.

Heat management is half the battle

A quick workflow for switching

  • Heat to the material's mid-range, then remove the old nozzle while warm.
  • Check the seat and the heater block threads are clean; reseat torqued to spec.
  • Re-run a flow calibration for the new bore — line width and extrusion multiplier shift when you change nozzle size.
  • Print a short test gusset before committing to the full job.
