Wet Filament Ruined Your Print? A Practical Guide to Drying and Storing PLA, PETG, and Nylon

If you have ever pulled a spool from a closet after a long break and watched your printer cough out a stringy, popping mess, you have met the most common silent killer in desktop 3D printing: moisture. Filament is hygroscopic, and once water gets into the polymer chain, every print becomes a fight. The good news is that wet filament is rarely dead, and a few smart habits will keep it dry for years.

Why Filament Absorbs Water

PLA, PETG, TPU, PA, and PVA all pull moisture from the air to some degree. PLA is forgiving, but once relative humidity climbs above 60 percent for a few weeks, you will start hearing tiny pops as water flashes to steam inside the nozzle. PETG is thirstier than most people think, and nylon can soak up enough water in 24 hours to become unprintable. Even ABS absorbs moisture, although the symptoms are subtler: weak layer adhesion and surface pitting.

How to Tell If a Spool Is Wet

  • Audible popping or hissing at the nozzle
  • Heavy stringing and oozing that does not respond to retraction tweaks
  • Blobby, inconsistent extrusion and rough surface texture
  • Brittle prints that snap along layer lines
  • Steam or bubbles emerging from the hot end during a purge

Rescuing a Wet Spool

A dedicated filament dryer is the cleanest answer, but a food dehydrator with accurate temperature control works in a pinch. Most PLA dries well at 45 to 50 degrees Celsius for 4 to 6 hours. PETG wants 60 to 65 degrees, and nylon benefits from 80 degrees for 8 to 12 hours. Whatever you use, keep the temperature steady, give the spool room for air to circulate, and never rush it. A convection oven is a poor choice because hot spots can soften the spool and distort the filament path.

If you do not have a dryer, your oven on its lowest setting with the door cracked can work, but watch it like a hawk. A kitchen oven is simply not as safe as a purpose-built device, and a single mistake will ruin an entire roll.

Long-Term Storage That Actually Works

The best dry box is one you will actually use. Vacuum bags with a fresh desiccant packet are cheap, but they are easy to forget. A heated dry box that keeps the spool at 40 to 45 degrees during printing is a much better experience, especially for nylon and PETG. For spools sitting on the shelf between projects, sealed plastic bins with a couple of rechargeable silica gel packs and a small humidity indicator card work beautifully.

A Simple Daily Habit

After every successful print, weigh the spool and write the date on the label. If you see a small weight gain over time, you have a leak in your storage. Combine that with a humidity card in every storage bin, and you will go from guessing to knowing exactly when a spool needs attention.
