Most print-quality problems are not caused by the slicer — they come from the parts you put around the printer. Three accessories solve a surprising share of frustrating failures: a PEI build plate, a filament dryer and quality release film for resin machines. Here is how each one helps.
1. Cold PEI Build Plates: Adhesion Without the Heat Drama
Warping, curling corners and stubborn parts are usually surface problems. A textured PEI build plate gives strong grip while printing and clean release when cool.
- Reduced need for glue sticks and tape.
- Better first layers for PLA, PETG and ABS.
- Lower thermal demands — a cold PEI plate can deliver great adhesion for many spools on unheated beds.
Care tips
- Wipe with IPA between prints; let it dry fully.
- Use a scraper only when the plate is cool and parts detach easily.
- Avoid metal scrapers on PEI to prevent scoring.
2. Filament Dryer Boxes: Remove the Hidden Variable
As covered in our drying guide, moisture quietly ruins stringing and layer quality. A filament drying box does double duty: it stores spools in a controlled environment and actively dries them before printing.
| Benefit | How it helps |
|---|---|
| Active drying | Removes moisture before it reaches the nozzle. |
| Sealed storage | Keeps desiccant fresh and spools ready. |
| Temperature control | Safe for PLA, PETG, ABS and TPU. |
3. Release Films: The Quiet Hero of Resin Printing
On the resin side, the FEP / nFEP film that lines the vat is the unsung accessory. Old, scratched or stretched film causes suction failures, stuck layers and vat leaks.
- Check for pitting, wrinkles and clouding regularly.
- Replace when print failures rise for no other reason.
- Choose a well-built nFEP/PFA release film for smoother peel and longer life on larger machines.
Build Your Setup Incrementally
You do not need to buy everything at once. Start with what removes your current biggest failure mode:
- First layers unstable → add a cold PEI build plate.
- Stringing and rough surfaces → control filament moisture with a dryer box.
- Resin layer failures → refresh the vat with a new release film.
Small, targeted hardware upgrades routinely produce bigger gains than hours of slicer tuning.
