Shelf Life Is Not a Rumour: Storing, Reviving and Rotating Your Filament Stock

Filament is a consumable, but it is not shelf-stable. Between the day a spool is opened and the day it is finished, the material is quietly competing with the room it lives in. PLA absorbs a little moisture, PETG and TPU absorb a lot, and nylon will drink whatever is available. The symptoms show up long before a print fails outright, which is why storage deserves the same attention as slicer settings.

What moisture actually does to a print

Water absorbed into filament turns to steam in the hotend. That steam expands roughly a thousandfold as it crosses the melt zone, and it has to go somewhere. It escapes as micro-bubbles in the extruded bead, which produces a set of defects that are easy to mistake for temperature problems.

The tell-tale signs of wet filament

  • Popping or crackling at the nozzle as it extrudes.
  • Stringing and fine fuzz that no retraction setting cures.
  • Rough, matte top surfaces instead of smooth ones.
  • Weak layer adhesion — parts snap along layer lines.
  • Inconsistent extrusion and small voids inside the wall.

If several of those appear at once, stop tuning the slicer and dry the spool. It is usually the fastest fix available.

The difference between storage and drying

These are two separate jobs and both are necessary. Storage slows moisture gain. Drying removes moisture that has already been absorbed. A sealed bag alone will not rescue a spool that spent a humid month on an open shelf, and a drier alone will not keep a spool dry if it goes straight back onto that shelf.

A storage system that survives real life

  • Sealed container per spool with a fresh desiccant pack, resealed after every use.
  • Desiccant you can recharge: colour-indicating beads that you dry and reuse rather than throw away.
  • Active dry box for the materials that matter most — nylon, TPU, or any spool you use daily.
  • Humidity reference: a cheap hygrometer inside the box tells you when desiccant has given up.
  • Rotation rule: oldest spool first, and nothing stays open indefinitely.

Rotating stock so nothing goes stale

Most workshops accumulate filament faster than they consume it. Without a rotation rule, the spools at the back quietly age out. A simple first-in-first-out discipline solves this, and it costs nothing but a label.

  • Write the opening date on each spool as you open it.
  • Store in a single row, oldest at the front.
  • When a spool is under a quarter left, either finish it or plan the project that will.
  • Any spool unused for more than a few months gets dried before its next job.
