Of all the skills in resin printing, supporting a model well is the one that separates clean success from a plate full of failed rafts and floating cavities. The good news: you do not need to guess. LCD slicing tools expose a hierarchy of support types — light, medium and heavy — and each one exists for a reason. Here is the mental model that makes choosing them automatic.

Why Supports Exist at All

A resin part is printed layer by layer from a build plate. Anything that hangs in mid-air — an arm, a sword, a chin — has nothing beneath it, so gravity and the peeling film can pull it loose. Supports anchor those overhangs to the model and to the plate so layers stay put until they cure and connect.

The Three Workhorses

Three Rules of Thumb

  • Support the smallest, not just the largest. In most slicers, light supports can also be told to catch islands automatically; let the tool find them, then verify a few visually.
  • Anchor heavy cross-sections with heavy supports. When a low layer has a wide flat area, the suction force at peel spikes. Heavy supports brace that and stop the part flexing off the plate.
  • Keep supports on hidden faces. Rotate the model so scars land on the back, the bottom or inside a cavity, and you massively cut post-processing sanding.

The Orientation Habit

Supports and orientation are two halves of the same problem. A model tilted 25–45° presents fewer flat layers to the film, which cuts peel force overall and reduces how much heavy support you need. Pair a good tilt with correct support placement and even big-format prints stay on the plate.

A Note on the Resin

Support decisions also shift with material stiffness. Flexible and elastic resins flex under their own weight, so they often need denser support contact to hold shape, while a tuned standard photopolymer such as ANTINSKY Standard Lite Resin gives a predictable, low-odour baseline that is easy to support and finish. Consistent viscosity and cure window make settings reproducible.

After the Print

When supports come off, do it before full post-curing while the resin is slightly softer, and cut light supports near the surface with a flush cutter rather than tearing. A quick pass with isopropyl alcohol, then the recommended cure, leaves clean contact points that barely show.

Wrap-Up

Match the support size to the load, tilt to keep heavy flats off the film, hide scars, and choose a resin whose behaviour you can predict. Master those four and resin support becomes routine rather than a lottery.
