Release Films Explained: nFEP, ACF and HDF for Cleaner, Longer-Lasting LCD Printing

One of the most underrated upgrades on an LCD resin printer is the release (FEP) film. The film sits at the bottom of the resin vat and separates from the print on every lift. The right film reduces peel force, lifts cleaner, and extends the life of your vat — and it is an accessory any resin user should understand.

Why Release Force Matters

  • Peel force is the suction that yanks the model off the film. High force risks delamination, sticking, and print failure.
  • A smoother release lets you increase lift speed, cutting print time, and reduces the chance of a model peeling loose.
  • Films wear: tiny scratches scatter light and cause uneven curing, so replace the film when you see a permanent dull band.

Signs a Film Is Past Its Prime

  • Sudden adhesion failures or a part releasing on one side only.
  • Visible cloudy or scratched center band.
  • Resin sticking persistently to the vat bottom.

Choosing the Right Size

Match the film footprint to your printer's vat. Many modern machines use 280 × 450 mm sheets. Check your vat dimensions, cut to fit leaving a few millimeters of clearance, and secure the film with even tension to avoid wrinkles that trap resin.
