PEO vs PEI Build Plates: Which Print Surface Is Best?

PEO vs PEI: Choosing Your Print Surface

The build plate surface is critical for first layer success. Here's how PEI and PEO compare.

PEI (Polyetherimide)

The gold standard for FDM build plates. Available in smooth or textured finishes. PEI provides excellent adhesion when heated (60-80°C for PLA) and releases when cool.

  • Pros: Reliable adhesion, works with most materials, durable
  • Cons: PETG can over-adhere (needs release agent)
  • Best for: PLA, ABS, TPU

PEO (Polyethylene Oxide)

A newer surface technology gaining popularity for its unique release properties.

  • Pros: Excellent release without cooling, works well with PETG
  • Cons: Less widely tested, may need higher bed temperatures
  • Best for: PETG, TPU, materials that stick too well to PEI
