Why Wet Filament Is Your Worst Enemy

Moisture absorption is the #1 cause of mysterious print quality issues. PLA filament can absorb up to 1.5% of its weight in water within 48 hours of exposure — and the effects are devastating: brittle prints, stringing, popping sounds from the nozzle, and surface defects that look like acne.

Which Filaments Need Drying Most?

Not all filaments are equally hygroscopic (water-absorbing):

  • Nylon: Extremely hygroscopic — can go from bone-dry to waterlogged in under 6 hours. Drying before EVERY print is non-negotiable.
  • PETG: Moderately hygroscopic. If left out for a week, expect bubbling and reduced layer adhesion.
  • ABS: Less hygroscopic than PETG, but still benefits from drying if stored in humid environments.
  • PLA: The most forgiving. In dry climates, PLA can go weeks without issues. In humid regions, dry every 1-2 weeks.
  • TPU: Highly hygroscopic — flexible filaments absorb moisture fast and will foam during extrusion if wet.

Recommended Drying Temperatures & Times

  • PLA: 45-50°C for 4-6 hours
  • PETG: 60-65°C for 4-6 hours
  • ABS: 65-75°C for 4-6 hours
  • TPU: 50-55°C for 5-8 hours
  • Nylon: 70-80°C for 8-12 hours

Warning: Never exceed the glass transition temperature (Tg) of your filament when drying — you'll fuse the entire spool together. PLA begins to soften around 55-60°C, so keep it below 50°C.

Storage After Drying

Drying is only half the battle. Proper storage prevents re-absorption:

  • Airtight containers with color-indicating silica gel (turns from blue to pink when saturated).
  • Print-from-dry-box setups — keep filament in a sealed container with PTFE tube running to the extruder.
