When extrusion starts skipping, strings appear, or the first layer becomes blotchy, most of us blame the profile. Often the real problem is quieter and more mechanical: the hotend. A hotend is a beat-up but vital component, and it fails slowly — long before you notice, degraded printing is already costing you quality.
What Slowly Goes Wrong
1. Thermal creep — the silent killer
Heat travels up the heat-break toward the cold side of the hotend. If airflow (the fan) weakens or dust clogs the fins, heat migrates upward, softening the filament before it reaches the melt zone. The result is soft, un-melted plastic in the heat-break that jams, skips and blobs. Keeping the heat-break fan clean is the number-one prevention.
2. Carbonised residue
Filament left sitting in a hot nozzle slowly burns into carbon. That residue narrows the orifice and changes how the molten plastic flows — often producing thin, inconsistent lines or sudden clogging.
3. Worn or deformed nozzles
Brass nozzles are soft. Prints over abrasive materials like carbon-fibre or glow-in-the-dark filament wear the orifice oval over time, spreading lines and hurting detail. Impact with the bed can also bend a nozzle tip.
A Practical Hotend Maintenance Routine
Every print session
- Check the heat-break fan spins freely and isn't packed with dust.
- Wipe any filament strings or blobs off the nozzle with a soft cloth once it cools.
Every few weeks (or every big job)
- Cold pull — heat the nozzle to print temp, push filament through, then drop temperature and yank the filament out while pulling the hardened plug. This clears internal residue beautifully.
- Brush the block — clean carbonised build-up off the heater block nozzle threads.
- Check the heat-break fins — use compressed air to clear them.

Signs It Is Time to Swap the Nozzle
- Consistent over-extrusion or spreading despite a correct profile.
- Poor first-layer adhesion that no bed-temp change fixes.
- Streaks or lines that no retraction adjustment cures.
- You print a lot of carbon-fibre or glow-in-the-dark material.
If a new nozzle instantly restores crisp corners and even bead width, the old one was the culprit all along.
Choosing a Nozzle That Lasts
For everyday PLA and PETG, a quality plated brass nozzle is plenty. The moment you print abrasive or high-temp materials regularly, step up:
- Hardened steel — resists abrasive wear, holds heat a little less well.
- Tungsten — the premium choice: extremely hard, excellent thermal conductivity, great for abrasive and long production runs.
- High-flow nozzles — larger melt zone allowing bigger volumetric flow for fast, thick prints.
