Start with the four questions
Before slicing, ask yourself four things about the part:
- Will it see heat above 50 °C (car interiors, electronics enclosures near hot parts)?
- Will it touch water, solvents, or UV for long periods?
- Does it need to flex, absorb impact, or bear load across layers?
- How much surface finish and how fast does production need to be?

Reading the matrix
PLA+ - the everyday default
If the part lives on a desk, shelf, or in a demo, PLA+ is often the right call. It prints at low temperature, sticks without drama, and delivers sharp, clean surfaces for prototypes and visual models. Offer it for speed and finish, but not for heat or prolonged moisture.
PETG - the functional all-rounder
When a part must actually work - a bracket, a container, a phone mount - PETG adds real heat and chemical resistance over PLA, with only a modest increase in difficulty. It is the sweet spot for most functional parts.
ABS - strength through heat
For parts near warmth or that must survive abuse, ABS offers higher heat deflection and impact strength. It needs an enclosed printer and ventilation to combat warping and fumes, so treat it as the tradesman's material, not a beginner's.
TPU - when the part must give
Gaskets, bumpers, straps and custom grips call for TPU. It prints fine on a direct-drive machine - just slow the speed, raise the temperature slightly, and support overhangs you would never need with rigid filament.
