Z-Offset Calibration: The Most Critical Step

Getting the nozzle-to-bed distance right is essential:

  • Too high: Filament doesn't squish onto the bed — poor adhesion, stringy first layer
  • Too low: Filament is squished too thin — rough surface, nozzle scraping, clog risk
  • Just right: Filament is pressed into a flat, uniform ribbon with a slight squeeze on the sides

Most modern printers (Bambu Lab, Creality K-series, Prusa MK4) have automatic bed leveling, but you should still verify first layer quality with a simple first layer test print (a single-layer square or grid).

Adhesion Aids and Best Practices

PLA

  • A clean PEI sheet is usually enough
  • For stubborn adhesion, use a thin layer of glue stick or hairspray
  • Isopropyl alcohol (≥90%) cleaning between prints

PETG

  • Critical: Always use a release agent (glue stick) on PEI — PETG can bond permanently to bare PEI
  • Lower first layer speed (20–30mm/s) helps
  • If using glass, allow the bed to cool completely before removing the print

ABS

  • Requires a heated enclosure to prevent warping
  • Use ABS slurry (ABS dissolved in acetone) for excellent adhesion
  • High bed temperature (100–110°C) is mandatory

TPU

  • Use a low bed temperature (40–60°C) — TPU is flexible and releases easily
  • Textured PEI works best
  • Slow first layer speed (10–15mm/s)

Troubleshooting Common Adhesion Problems

Print Warps at Corners

  • Increase bed temperature by 5°C
  • Use a brim (5–10mm wide)
  • Check for drafts — use an enclosure or draft shield

Print Detaches Mid-Print

  • Clean the build plate thoroughly with warm water and dish soap
  • Ensure bed is properly leveled
  • First layer height should be ~0.20mm for a 0.4mm nozzle

First Layer Has Gaps

  • Nozzle is too far from bed — reduce Z-offset by 0.02–0.05mm
  • Increase first layer flow rate to 105–110%
  • Check that filament diameter is within spec (±0.03mm)
