Support Structures in 3D Printing: Types, Settings, and Removal Tips

Mastering Support Structures

Supports enable complex geometries with dramatic overhangs. Here's how to get them right.

When Do You Need Supports?

Any overhang steeper than 45° from vertical needs supports. Bridges longer than 5mm also benefit.

Support Types

  • Tree Supports: Organic, fewer contact points, easier removal. Best for complex models.
  • Standard (Linear): Vertical pillars. More material but more reliable for heavy overhangs.

Settings to Tune

  • Density: 15-20% is usually sufficient
  • Z Distance: 0.12-0.20mm for PLA, 0.16-0.24mm for PETG
  • Pattern: Grid (stronger) vs Zigzag (easier removal)
  • Support Roof: Highly recommended for smoother supported surfaces

Removal Tips

  • Use flush cutters for thick supports
  • Heat the part slightly (50°C) for difficult supports on PETG/ABS
  • For resin prints, remove supports before final curing

With quality ANTINSKY filament, you can push overhangs further before needing supports.
