The first layer determines whether your whole print lives or dies. No amount of slicer tuning fixes a bad surface. Two things dominate first-layer success: bed leveling and the build surface material. With the right approach and a good paint — like ANTINSKY's Cold PEI Build Plate — you can say goodbye to warped corners coming off mid-print.
First, Get the Bed Level (or Tilt-Compensated)
- Manual leveling: level at all four corners with a sheet of paper, then re-check the middle.
- Auto-leveling (probe / BL-Touch): run the probe, and let the printer build a mesh that compensates for a slightly warped bed.
- Z-offset: the single most important dial. Too high = weak adhesion; too low = squished, rough elephants-foot layers.
Why PEI Build Plates Win
Polyetherimide (PEI) is prized because parts stick firmly while the bed is warm and release easily once it cools. That natural release means far fewer scraped knuckles and damaged prints.
| Plate Surface | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cold PEI (no heating) | PLA, PETG on compatible beds | Prints without pre-heating, less odour |
| Smooth PEI | PETG, PLA | Glass-smooth bottom surface |
| Textured / rough PEI | PETG, ABS, engineering filaments | Deeper grip, helps warp-prone materials |
Keep the Surface Clean
Skin oils and old adhesive are silent killers of adhesion.
- Wipe with isopropyl alcohol (70%+) between prints.
- For stubborn PETG or ABS residue, a light wash with warm water and mild detergent restores grip.
- Never scratch a PEI sheet with metal scrapers — use the flex release instead.
Accessories That Make First Layers Easier
Reliable printing is a system, not a single part. Alongside a good plate, these upgrades pay for themselves:
- ANTINSKY FilaBox 3D Filament Drying Box — dry filament feeds smoother and sticks better.
- ANTINSKY High Flow Nozzle — keeps flow consistent for wider first lines.
- ANTINSKY nFEP Film — for resin users, a clean vat film means reliable peel force.
Level it, keep it clean, and trust a good PEI surface — your first layers (and every layer after) will thank you. Explore the full accessory range at innostation3d.com. Author: Inno Uncle.
