Nailing the First Layer: Bed Adhesion and Temperature for PLA, PETG, ABS and TPU

Every successful FDM print starts with the first layer. If it does not stick, nothing else matters: the print warps, lifts, or detaches halfway through. The good news is that first-layer problems are almost always fixable with the right bed temperature and a few adhesion habits.

Bed Temperature by Material

Each filament has an ideal bed temperature range. Too cold and the plastic does not bond; too hot and you get elephant foot and warping. Here is a quick reference for the four most common materials:

Material Bed Temp Adhesion Notes
PLA+ 50-60°C Sticks easily, works on most surfaces
PETG 70-80°C Strong bond, can over-stick on PEI
ABS 90-110°C Needs enclosure to prevent warping
TPU 95A 30-50°C Flexible, lower bed temp works fine

Adhesion Tricks That Work

  • Keep the bed clean: oils from your fingers are the number one cause of poor adhesion
  • Level the bed carefully and re-check it after removing stuck parts
  • Use a brim for ABS and large PETG parts to anchor the edges
  • Slow down the first layer to 20-30 mm/s for a solid bond
  • Make sure the first layer height is set correctly, usually 0.2 mm

Troubleshooting Common First-Layer Problems

If the print lifts at the corners, the bed is probably too cold or the room has a draft. If the first layer looks squished and spread, the nozzle is too close. If the filament beads up and does not stick, the bed is too far or not clean enough. Make one change at a time and re-test a small calibration print before committing to a full model.
