If your prints show ringing ghosts beside corners, fat blobs at the seams, or walls that look fine from ten feet away but awful up close, the problem is usually not your nozzle — it is how fast the machine is moving. Speed, acceleration and jerk control how the toolhead starts, corners and stops. Tune them to match each material and your quality jumps without touching the extruder. Move the head right and half your defects vanish
The extruder can only lay plastic cleanly when it moves at a steady, controlled speed. When the head accelerates too hard into a corner, the frame stretches and vibrates; the lingering vibration draws echo lines next to every feature (ringing). When the head stops too abruptly, molten plastic keeps oozing a moment longer, leaving a blob. Both are motion errors, not extrusion errors.

Material-by-material baselines
PLA+ — the fast and clean starting point
ANTINSKY PLA+ tolerates brisk motion. It is the right material to establish your machine's reliable top speed. Start around 150 mm/s print speed, 3000 mm/s² acceleration, and a moderate jerk; it will usually look clean with decent part cooling.
PETG — back the speed off, keep it tidy
ANTINSKY PETG is stringier and needs a steadier head. Dropping to 100–120 mm/s with 2000 mm/s² drastically reduces strings and layer artifacts. Because PETG is slightly flexible when hot, sharp corners benefit from gentler acceleration.
ABS — moderate and enclosed
ANTINSKY ABS prints fine at moderate speeds, but it warps if cooled unevenly. Run 100–140 mm/s in an enclosure, keep ambient draughts away, and let acceleration sit near 2500 mm/s².
TPU — slow is smooth, smooth is fast
ANTINSKY TPU 85A is soft; fast, jerky motion makes it jam or blob. Print at 30–50 mm/s, reduce acceleration to 1000 mm/s² and use a very low jerk. This is the one material where matching the speed budget to the flexibility is everything.
A tuning workflow that never fails
- Print a speed test tower with the material you'll actually use.
- Find the highest speed that still shows crisp corners — that is your ceiling.
- Run a ringing / ghosting test on your acceleration; lower it in steps until the echo disappears.
- Drop jerk just below the point where corner blobs form.
- Save the profile per material — never reuse PLA's motion for TPU.
When to blame something else
Slow and steady motion will not fix a wet spool, an under-extruding hotend or a worn high-flow nozzle. If a part prints slowly but still looks rough, move to the material and hardware checklists. Motion tuning handles ringing, corner blobs and layer wobble; everything else needs its own fix. Master the three knobs first, and you will finally see what your machine is actually capable of.
Calibration order that keeps motion sane
Change one axis at a time and print a quick test after each change, or you will never know which knob caused the improvement. A reliable order is: top speed → acceleration → jerk, then re-test your regular speed tower once more. Saved per material, your profiles become a set of trustworthy defaults you can reuse on every future machine — the same three knobs apply whether your printer is Cartesian, CoreXY or a multi-head flagship. Matching a clean profile to the right spool is the fastest route to professional-looking output on ordinary hardware.
