A high-flow hotend is a wonderful thing — until it clogs. The same speed that lets you finish prints in half the time also pushes more heat and material through a smaller area, which raises the stakes for maintenance. A little care goes a long way.
Understand the Two Failure Modes
- Clogs — debris or carbonised filament blocks the nozzle, usually after a material change or a cold shutdown.
- Thermal creep — heat travels too far up the heat break, softening filament before the melt zone and causing a jam.
Daily Habits That Prevent Trouble
- Always purge when changing materials, especially going from high-temp to low-temp filament.
- Keep the cooling fan on the heat break running — it is your main defense against thermal creep.
- Use a filament with a tight diameter tolerance to avoid feed inconsistency.
When to Cold Pull
A cold pull clears most minor clogs. Heat the nozzle to printing temperature, feed filament, let it cool to about 90°C, then pull firmly. The softened plug pulls out with the filament, dragging debris with it. Repeat two or three times for stubborn cases.
