How to Achieve Perfect First Layer Adhesion Every Time

Why First Layer Matters

A perfect first layer is the foundation of every successful 3D print. Here's how to nail it every time.

Step 1: Proper Bed Leveling

Whether manual or automatic, proper bed leveling is essential. For manual leveling, use the paper method — the nozzle should grip a standard piece of paper with slight resistance. For ABL (Auto Bed Leveling), ensure your probe is calibrated and clean.

Step 2: Z-Offset Calibration

The Z-offset determines nozzle-to-bed distance. Too high = poor adhesion, too low = elephant foot. Print a single-layer square and adjust live. The ideal first layer has slight squish but visible layer lines.

Step 3: Surface Preparation

Clean your build plate thoroughly. Our ANTINSKY Cold PEI Build Plate works best when wiped with isopropyl alcohol between prints. For stubborn PETG, a thin layer of glue stick acts as a release agent.

Step 4: Temperature Tuning

  • PLA: Bed 60°C, increase by 5°C for first layer
  • PETG: Bed 75°C, slow first layer to 20mm/s
  • ABS: Bed 100°C, use enclosure

Common Problems & Solutions

  • Print won't stick: Lower Z-offset by 0.05mm, increase bed temp
  • Elephant foot: Raise Z-offset, reduce initial layer flow
  • Warping: Use brim, increase bed temp, eliminate drafts
