Elegoo just dropped the Centauri 2 series on July 7, and it is worth paying attention to — not because it reinvents the wheel, but because it makes multicolor printing a lot more accessible than it was six months ago.
What the Centauri 2 Actually Brings
By Inno Uncle
The Centauri 2 and Centauri 2 Combo are open-frame CoreXY printers with a brand-new CANVAS multicolor system. CANVAS handles four filaments at once, with independent motors for each channel, RFID filament recognition, automatic refill when a spool runs out, and tangle detection. If you have ever had a multicolor print fail at hour 14 because of a snagged spool, the tangle detection alone is a meaningful upgrade.
Under the hood, the Centauri 2 runs a die-cast aluminum frame with dual 4260 stepper motors and precision linear guides. Acceleration tops out at 20,000 mm/s², which puts it in the same league as printers costing twice as much. The hot end goes to 350°C, the bed hits 110°C, and there are 22 onboard sensors monitoring everything from filament runout to power-loss recovery.
Where This Fits in the 2026 Market
For most of 2025, multicolor printing meant buying into a closed ecosystem — usually Bambu Lab's AMS or Prusa's MMU. Both are excellent systems, but both lock you into their hardware and, to some degree, their filament. The CANVAS system on the Centauri 2 is Elegoo's answer: a standalone multicolor unit that works with the printer you already have (if you already own a Centauri Carbon), or as a combo kit out of the box.
What makes this interesting from a buyer's perspective is the price-to-feature ratio. Elegoo has always positioned itself as the value player, and the Centauri 2 continues that pattern — CoreXY speed, enclosed-optional design, and four-color printing at a price that undercuts most competitors.
Should You Care?
If you mostly print functional parts in a single color, probably not — you will get more value from a fast single-extruder printer and a good filament selection. But if you print models, gifts, or signage where color matters, the Centauri 2 makes multicolor a realistic next step rather than a premium splurge.
