When Printing Beats Buying

Last month I spent two hours hunting for a drawer divider that would fit my oddly-shaped kitchen drawer. Nothing at IKEA, nothing on Amazon. Three hours later, I had a custom-fit divider system fresh off my printer — total cost about $1.20 in PLA.

This is where 3D printing genuinely shines: not in printing trinkets, but in solving real, annoying household problems that mass-manufactured products can't address. Here are the prints I've actually kept and used.

Cable Management That Doesn't Suck

Behind every desk is a rat's nest of cables. Printed cable clips — simple U-shaped channels that snap onto desk edges — keep everything routed neatly. I print mine in PETG for a bit of flex so they don't crack when you push a thick cable through. Mount them with double-sided tape or small screws. One spool of filament can produce enough clips for an entire office.

Kitchen Drawer Dividers That Actually Fit

Kitchen drawers come in weird dimensions. I measured mine, modeled a grid of interlocking dividers, and printed them in sections. Pro tip: leave 1mm tolerance on each side — PLA shrinks slightly as it cools, and a too-tight fit is worse than slightly loose. Pegboard Hooks and Tool Holders

Standard pegboard hooks are flimsy and expensive for what they are. Printed hooks can be customized for specific tools — I have one shaped perfectly for my heat gun, another that holds three pairs of flush cutters. Print them at 4-5 walls and 40% infill. They'll outlast the store-bought ones.

Shopping Bag Dispenser

You know those plastic shopping bags that multiply in the cupboard? A wall-mounted dispenser with an opening at the bottom lets you stuff them in from the top and pull one out when needed. This was a two-hour print that my family actually thanks me for.

Bathroom Shelf Brackets

Small bathrooms have awkward corners. Triangular shelf brackets printed in PETG can hold a surprising amount of weight when designed with ribs underneath. I printed four for a corner shelf that now holds shampoo bottles without complaint.

Drawer Organizer for Electronics

SD cards, USB drives, SIM card ejectors — all the tiny stuff that disappears into junk drawers. A shallow tray with custom-sized compartments solves this permanently. Gridfinity-compatible for the truly organized.

A Note on Materials

For home organization prints, PLA works fine for most indoor applications. PETG is better for anything that sees moisture or sunlight. Don't use PLA in the car — I learned that lesson with a melted phone mount on a summer day. A filament drying box helps keep your PETG and other hygroscopic materials print-ready, which matters when you're doing functional prints that need to hold up.
