When Prints Grow Hair: Beating Stringing, Oozing and Surface Fuzz

A part can be dimensionally perfect and still look unfinished, draped in fine hairs of filament wherever the nozzle moved between features. Those hairs are stringing and oozing, and they are almost always a balance of three numbers: how much the nozzle retracts, how hot it runs, and how much moisture sits in the spool. Here is how to remove them without thrashing every setting in your slicer.

Why stringing happens

A hot nozzle holds molten plastic. Every time the extruder stops and the head travels to a new location, pressure inside the melt wants to push a little plastic out of the tip. Retraction briefly pulls the filament back to relieve that pressure. If the pull is too short, too weak, or fighting against damp filament, a hair of plastic lands between features. Once you see stringing as a pressure problem rather than a curse, the cure becomes systematic.

Three levers, in the right order

  • Moisture comes first. A damp spool steams in the hotend; expanding steam forces extra flow. Wet filament strings no matter what you do in software, so dry the spool before touching retraction.
  • Retraction next. Add distance in small steps until wisping stops, then tune speed so the restart does not stall.
  • Temperature last. Running too hot lowers melt viscosity and encourages oozing. Drop nozzle temperature only as far as layer-to-layer bond strength stays intact.

Practical numbers that behave

Retraction distance is specific to your extruder style — a direct-drive toolhead needs far less than a long Bowden tube. Start near your printer's known-good value and increase by 0.2–0.5 mm each test until the wisps stop. A repeatable cure for fuzz

Stringing is a chain: wetness feeds pressure, temperature feeds flow, and retraction is the relief valve. Fix the chain in that order and fuzz mostly disappears on its own. Apply the three levers systematically on dry, good-tolerance material and you will spend less time chasing wisps and more time actually finishing prints.
