Multicolor Printing Heats Up: Tool Changers and Single-Nozzle Systems

Multicolor printing used to mean long swaps and towers of wasted plastic. The latest hardware is changing that fast. Two approaches now dominate: independent tool changers that park and swap entire hotends, and single-nozzle systems that merge multiple filament channels before the melt zone.

Tool Changers: Zero-Waste Swaps

Prusa's INDX add-on turns the CORE One Plus into an eight-tool machine. Each tool keeps its own nozzle, and swaps produce only about 0.015 grams of waste - a multi-color demo printed with under 30 grams of purge versus over 800 grams on a traditional setup. The trade-off is assembly time and cost.

Single-Nozzle Merge Systems

Creality's SPARKX i8 takes a different path with its QuarTeks system, merging four filament channels into one printhead just 1.7 mm from the nozzle. The result is a true one-second color swap with no purge tower at all. Early reviewers call it a potential record-breaker.
