Filament Drying Guide: Rescue Wet PLA, PETG and TPU With the Right Dryer and Storage

Wet filament causes more print failures than almost anything else. Popping, hissing and rough silk surfaces are almost always moisture showing up in the melt. This guide shows you how to spot wet filament, how long to dry each material, and which ANTINSKY hardware keeps your spools safe long-term.

Why Spools Absorb Moisture

Every common 3D printing filament is hygroscopic — it pulls water vapour from the air. PLA is the least affected; PETG and ABS are more sensitive; TPU and especially nylon absorb water quickly. Even a "sealed" spool left on a machine in a humid room picks up moisture over days.

Signs Your Filament Is Wet

  • Steam and popping at the nozzle.
  • Rough, matte or blistered surface finish.
  • Stringing that does not go away with retraction tuning.
  • Weak, easy-snapping prints.

Drying Temperatures (Use These, Not Guesses)

Large spools of ANTINSKY PLA+ rarely need drying fresh out of the vacuum bag, but once a spool has been out for a week, a short dry before a critical print removes risk.

The Four Ways to Dry (Ranked)

  1. Dedicated filament dryer (recommended) — the ANTINSKY FilaBox heats and circulates air evenly with a sealed chamber. Set the temperature, walk away, and come back to a dry spool.
  2. Food dehydrator — works in a pinch; just remove the central tray and monitor temperature.
  3. Heated bed method (emergency) — lay the spool on a 50–60 °C bed under a box; slow but usable.
  4. Dry box + desiccant (storage only) — keeps filament dry but does not remove existing moisture.

Keep Filament Dry Long-Term

Drying is only half the job — storage is what makes it last. Common Drying Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using the kitchen oven (accuracy + food-safety issues).
  • Drying PLA+ above 60 °C and softening the spool.
  • Drying a spool and then leaving it on the machine outdoors.
